Dear Friends of Kennesaw State University: Since I joined Kennesaw State last year, I noticed one of the University’s most striking features is how much the campus community values innovation in all functions. Whether it is in teaching, learning, research or any other creative pursuit, the importance of new ideas and ways to improve are at the core of everything that goes on here. A constant drive to move forward and reach higher is an enduring feature of those who work at the University, and our students graduate with that undeniable focus to make their communities better. That spirit of innovation is at the heart of all the stories in this issue of Kennesaw State University Magazine. In particular, our cover story, “Saving Lives” explores a fundamentally sound part of Kennesaw State’s efforts to keep students safe – campus programs that promote education about opioid addiction and recovery. Kennesaw State University is unique in its approach to advocacy efforts, and schools nationwide are beginning to take notice. Our staff, students, and alumni are leaders in understanding the recovery process, and the story highlights just a portion of what makes our programs in this area so outstanding. In addition, the story “Topography of Recovery” goes into further detail about students who are attempting to expand understanding of the recovery process in innovative ways. Of course, our outstanding faculty are engaging students with many methods and programs that enhance KSU’s reputation for innovation. In “Green Learning,” we examine many of the outdoor spaces at the Kennesaw and Marietta campuses that provide unique opportunities for learning. Also, “Building for Peace” introduces a new school at the University that signals Kennesaw State’s growing preeminence in the area of conflict management. As always, our students and alumni are at the core of the University’s success. In “Rise to the Top,” we explore the path to success of an alum who was named to the Georgia Supreme Court. And the story “Amazing Journey” highlights the inspiring story of two sisters who worked together to overcome obstacles and find success on the volleyball court. Thank you for reading Kennesaw State University Magazine, and I hope you see our progress now and our potential in the future. Sam Olens President, Kennesaw State University
