Be warned: If you get to play with Joe, be ready for a wager to be includ-ed. “A side wager to stimulate the mind and the body,” Baca sniffed. “Some-thing reasonable.” Baca has played with President Clinton at Andrews Air Force Base, which has three courses. Were there Billigans? “He’d hit a bad shot and then he’d hit another,” Baca recalled. “After I hit a shot President Clinton asked if I wanted to hit another. ‘No, sir, Mr. President, I’ll just play my own ball.’ And I beat him. Then I had him sign the card, too.” Work First ven though golf can build a bridge for a relationship that creates respect and dialogue that leads to compromise, the heart of our E democratic system, it is also an activity that most politicians will want to play down, said Davis. After all, it’s a leisure activity, one associated with chummi-ness and back-room handshakes. Every year as Governor, Davis was invited to play in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, and every year he turned it down. When on vacation, he did play Pebble Beach, and he’s also played at the prestigious Cypress Point Club with Clint East-wood, a member. But he always kept a low profi le. “Because most people don’t want the governor playing golf,” said Davis, who now works with the Loeb & Loeb law fi rm in Los Angeles. “You might think it’s OK on Saturday or Sunday. It didn’t matter. They want you working.” The low-profi le approach is im-portant, but for a high-level political executive, golf is a good outlet. “When I’m on the course, I don’t spend one moment thinking about work,” said Davis, a member at Hill-crest CC. “I get totally immersed in the game. It’s a total release. You need that as a politician. You need it for the sanity.” In that perspective, the pres-sure of running a large public entity like the state of California, or, in the case of President Obama, the United States, golf is a refreshing but needed relaxation. Being an executive oversee-ing the functions of a state or nation’s government there are good breaks and bad, some of which no one can predict. “It’s like playing a golf course you’ve never played before,” said Davis of being governor. “You don’t know where the trouble is.” I Save Green, Buy Platinum Purchase your 2012-2013 Platinum Club Card for only $199 for Palm Desert Residents, $299 Non-Residents Our Platinum Club Card is one of the most sought after frequent player programs in the Coachella Valley.
